Poor print quality is usually caused by clogged nozzles (inkjet), dirty drum or toner (laser), incorrect media settings, or outdated drivers. Start with the printout type to diagnose.
Inkjet Print Quality Fixes
Run a Nozzle Check
Print a nozzle check pattern from Printer Settings / Maintenance. Missing lines indicate clogged nozzles. Run 1–3 head cleaning cycles, then recheck.
Perform Print Head Alignment
Print an alignment page and enter the best column numbers (HP/Epson) or scan it automatically (Canon). Misalignment causes blurry text and color fringing.
Check Ink Levels & Cartridge Age
Low or expired ink causes banding and color shifts. Replace cartridges that are past their expiry date even if the ink level shows “OK.”
Print at least one color page per week. Modern inkjets run automatic maintenance cycles, but regular use is the best prevention.
Laser Print Quality Fixes
Clean the Drum Unit
Remove the drum/toner cartridge. Wipe the drum gently with a dry, lint-free cloth. Restart the page count if prompted. Dirty drum causes streaks and smears.
Shake the Toner Cartridge
Gently rock the cartridge side-to-side to redistribute toner. This extends life and eliminates light/faded output before replacement is needed.
Clean the Fuser & Paper Path
Use a dry cloth to clean the fuser area. Paper dust buildup on rollers causes smearing and spots on the back of pages.
Paper & Profile Settings
Using the wrong paper type setting is one of the most common causes of poor quality output. Always match the driver setting to the actual paper loaded.
| Paper Type | Driver Setting | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Plain copy paper | Plain / Plain Paper | Standard quality, fast |
| Inkjet photo paper | Photo / Glossy | Vivid color, sharp edges |
| Matte photo paper | Matte / Matte Photo | No glare, accurate color |
| Cardstock | Heavy / Thick Paper | No smearing, no jam |
