When the printer reports “Cartridge Not Detected” or “Cartridge Missing,” the root cause is usually dirty contacts, an incompatible cartridge, or firmware that has been updated to reject third-party cartridges. Work through these steps.
1. Remove and Reseat the Cartridge
Power Off and Open the Cartridge Bay
Turn off the printer. Open the cartridge cover and wait for the carriage to move to the access position.
Remove All Cartridges
Press the tab/button to release each cartridge. Leave them out for 30 seconds.
Reinstall Firmly
Reinsert each cartridge until you hear or feel a click. A loose cartridge will not make contact with the printer’s read head.
2. Check for Protective Tape
New cartridges have a pull-tab tape covering the copper contacts or ink nozzle. If tape remains on the contacts, the printer cannot read the chip.
- Remove the cartridge and inspect the copper contact strip on the side of the cartridge.
- Remove any remaining tape from the contacts AND the nozzle area.
- Reinstall and test.
3. Clean the Cartridge & Printer Contacts
Clean the Cartridge Contacts
Gently wipe the copper contacts on the cartridge with a dry, lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with distilled water. Allow to dry for 5 minutes before reinserting.
Clean the Printer Carriage Contacts
Use a dry cotton swab to gently clean the matching contacts inside the printer’s cartridge slots. Ink buildup here blocks the signal between printer and cartridge.
Isopropyl alcohol can corrode the copper contacts. Use only distilled water or a completely dry cloth.
4. Update or Downgrade Firmware
Some printer firmware updates intentionally block third-party (non-OEM) cartridges. If the issue started after an update:
- OEM cartridges: Update to the latest firmware via HP Smart / Canon PRINT / Epson Software Updater.
- Third-party cartridges: Downgrade firmware to the version that worked (check the manufacturer’s support page for older versions).
- Some HP printers have a “Cartridge Policy” setting in the web interface — set it to “Off” to allow third-party cartridges.
Persistent Detection Error?
An outdated driver can also prevent cartridge recognition. Printeroids Driver Updater ensures you have the latest version.
5. Perform a Printer Reset
- With the printer on, disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer (not the wall).
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Reconnect and power on. This performs a full hardware reset of the cartridge detection system.
The cartridge chip may be faulty. Try a different cartridge of the same model number to confirm. If the printer detects the new one, the original cartridge is defective.
