Paper jams are one of the most common printer problems, usually caused by worn rollers, incorrect paper loading, or debris in the paper path. Most can be cleared in under 5 minutes.

Step 1: Power Off First — Safety Warning

Always power off before clearing a jam

Turn off the printer and unplug from power. Wait 30 seconds. Never pull paper while the printer is powered on — the rollers could engage and cause injury or damage.

Step 2: Locate the Paper Jam

1

Open All Access Doors

Open the rear cover, front tray, and any side access panels. Check the printer’s LCD error message — it usually shows which zone is jammed (e.g., “Jam in Tray 1” or “Jam in Rear Door”).

2

Common Jam Locations

Check: input tray (bottom), output tray (top), rear access door, duplex unit (if equipped), and around the rollers inside the paper path.

Step 3: Remove Jammed Paper

1

Pull in the Direction of Travel

Gently pull the jammed paper in the direction it was moving through the printer. Do not pull backward against the rollers.

2

Remove All Torn Fragments

If paper tears, remove every fragment carefully. Even a small piece left inside will cause the next jam. Use a flashlight to check all paper paths.

3

Avoid Sharp Tools

Never use scissors, pens, or screwdrivers inside the paper path. They scratch rollers and damage sensors, causing permanent feed issues.

Step 4: Clean the Rollers & Sensors

  1. Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water (not alcohol) and gently wipe each visible roller.
  2. Check that paper sensors (small plastic flags) move freely and aren’t stuck with paper debris.
  3. Reassemble all covers securely and reconnect power.
  4. Print a test page to confirm the jam is cleared.

Step 5: Prevent Future Jams

  • Use recommended paper: Stick to the paper weight/type listed in your printer manual (usually 60–90 gsm plain paper).
  • Don’t overfill the tray: Fill to the ¾ mark maximum. Fan paper before loading.
  • Set the paper guides: Slide side guides snugly against the paper stack, not too tight.
  • Control humidity: Store paper in a dry place. Humid paper curls and jams frequently.
  • Clean monthly: Wipe rollers monthly to remove paper dust buildup.
After clearing the jam

Print a test page from Settings → Printers & scanners → your printer → Print a test page to confirm everything is working.
